Programme Management

Case Study: Base Currency Conversion Programme Management

The client

A German investment bank.

The Challenge

To programme manage a global base-currency conversion, co-ordinating 70 development teams and running a number of trial conversions.

The Solution

The solution was to establish a clear programme plan for the run-up to the conversion weekend and a detailed operational plan for the weekend itself.

A communications hub ("control room") was established for the month prior to conversion and to manage the conversion weekend and a steering committee or senior management was kept closely informed of progress and issues.

Key features of our work to manage the programme were:

  • We programme managed a 250 man-year £12m base-currency conversion programme.
  • We designed the programme office and "control room" and effective two-way reporting mechanisms.
  • We co-ordinated activities across multiple trading operations and 70 systems using a conversion weekend plan developed in MS Project.
  • We executed three trial conversion weekends and managed the plan (MS Project) for the conversion weekend itself.

The Outcome

The programme office and "control room" concepts were copied by other parts of the bank globally and the bank converted successfully.
